So, what is the difference between Engineerning Design and Industrial Design?

In a recent discussion that I had with Tim Poupore, president of Ove Industrial Design, Tim said that the difference was that Engineering design was focused mainly on a parts system, how things fit and work together.  Industrial Design is focused on the relationship of the design to people.  I liked the definition, but I think that it needs a bit more to be well rounded, so I will post it in the group Industrial Design on Linkedin.

Lets see what happens then.

Industrial Design In Durham Region

Well here I am.  And in the next few weeks I will be calling businesses in the Durham Region of Ontario Canada to solicit clients.  This is good time to establish a business, the economy only has one way to go, so if you start from here you can only go up so long as your efforts are earnest and there actually is a market for your services.  Well that’s my thinking anyway.  So who knows for sure.  If you have a manufacturing related business in this region, then expect my call.

What do I have to offer?  Years of design experience, knowledge of manufacturing practice and a priority to customer service.

Art or Design?

A contemplative moment

As a debate rages in the Linkedin group Industrial Design, I have a few thoughts of my own.

One assertion claimed that Art has no purpose, but Design has purpose. Well I don’t agree.

Art has purpose

Of course art has a purpose, the purpose is to arouse emotion in the recipient (viewer, listener etc). It is an expression of emotion and of appreciation of something that the artist is communicating with (in most cases) others. At the fringe is the artist who cares nothing about who may experience the work, but that is an extreme. Art is a statement! Here for an example is a statement that is art

(Shameless plug for my artist daughter.)

Industrial Design

Concepts and Imagination, when you need inspiration, just to see what other possibilities are there, PLC Systems can take your concept, and conduct a design idea session, just to explore the various possibilities for your product.  Using the idea with the greatest merit, then develop the idea to a digital prototype for review.

From there, rapid prototyping can give you a physical model to reflect on, and to make further revisions until there is an appealing balance of form and function.
